7 Movies That Put Las Vegas on The Map

As one of the most vibrant, dynamic, and action-packed cities in the world, Las Vegas is a natural location choice for an exciting cinematic adventure. Sin City is one of the most popular places for filmmakers to choose as their backdrop, thanks to the iconic sights that the boulevard has to offer and the picturesque deserts of Nevada.

While directors have tried to recreate the magic of Las Vegas in Hollywood before, the truth is that you simply can’t tap into the wonder of this place without actually being here.  Here are some of our favorite movies that really put Las Vegas on the map over the years — and don’t forget, if you live at Sky Condos, you can use our on-site projection room to watch your favorites in cinematic bliss!

1. Casino (1995)

Perhaps the most famous of all the Las Vegas movies, Casino is a masterpiece by the legendary Martin Scorsese. This film chronicles the real-life story of a player who knows how to beat the odds, a showgirl with an addiction and a bad attitude, and a psychotic thug. The movie’s fantastic soundtrack and beautiful visuals make it a feast for the eyes, and the performances of Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone, and Robert De Niro are well worth watching.

This movie is packed with adventure, and great for anyone who loves learning about the darker undertones of Las Vegas history.

2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

When Hunter S. Thompson wrote the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, most directors said it would be impossible to adapt to the big screen; however, Terry Gilliam managed to infuse his own touch of fantasy and magic into the story with the help of the phenomenal Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

This movie is not for the faint of heart, as there are plenty of chaotic scenes and intense images guiding you through an overwhelming interpretation of Sin City. Though it gets a little dark in places, this will be a good film for you if you want a wild ride of comedy, adventure, and drama.

3. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

Sean Connery takes us on a rip-roaring adventure in Diamonds Are Forever, a movie largely regarded as one of the best films in the phenomenal James Bond franchise. This one follows Bond on his trip to Vegas, where he hunts for a missing stash of stolen diamonds. In true Bond style, there are plenty of beautiful women and over-the-top villains along for the ride.

This movie is ideal for anyone who loves action and adventure. If you’re a fan of a good old Hollywood car chase, you’ll love the road scene where Bond speeds through downtown Vegas.

4. Viva Las Vegas (1964)

When it comes to iconic Vegas movies, there are few with more impact than Viva Las Vegas, in which Ann-Margret and Elvis Presley show off their incredible chemistry. This one does its namesake proud with wonderful music and scenes that are sure to draw you into the heart of the narrative, even more than 50 years after it was first released!

This movie is the perfect thrill ride for anyone who wants a snapshot of Vegas from days gone by. You’re sure to find yourself singing along in no time.

5. Showgirls (1995)

Regarded by some to be one of the best “bad” movies in history, Showgirls is a movie with a cult following similar to that of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Viewers follow Nomi Malone’s journey as she strives to become a headlining showgirl — encountering plenty of questionable acting and plot twists along the way. This one’s billed as an “erotic drama,” so put the kids to bed first!

6. Ocean’s 11 (1960)

Ah, Ocean’s 11: the perfect Vegas pick for anyone who loves fast-paced action and Hollywood heists. When it was released in 1960, the Rat Pack was at the height of its popularity. The original film’s lineup included everyone from Frank Sinatra to Joey Bishop and Dean Martin, and viewers are whirled into the thrill of a New Year’s Eve heist at the Desert Inn in Vegas.

Of course, since then we’ve seen a remake that’s just as much fun thanks to a star-studded cast including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and many other great names. If you’re looking for adventure and excitement, then check out either of these movies.

7. The Hangover (2009)

Finally, we’ve come to the perfect Vegas movie for anyone who’s looking for comedy and fun. The Hangover was a tremendous box-office hit that won a Golden Globe Award in the “Best comedy/musical” category. This hilarious romp of a film follows friends on a trip to Las Vegas for the standard bachelor party — though it sounds predictable, the adventure that ensues is anything but! Check this film out for laughs that will keep your sides aching for days.
