Start Where You Are
The first thing you need to do when planning a workout is recognize that different people are capable of different things. Everyone has to start somewhere, and that place is different from each person. A good way to make sure that you’re not overexerting yourself is to determine your current fitness level and plan your routine accordingly. This means recording your baseline fitness scores to give you a future method of tracking your progress. Make a note of the following things:
- Your pulse before and after walking for a mile
- How many pushups or sit-ups you can do without taking a break
- Your body mass index
- Your waist circumference
- How long it takes you to walk a mile
And it’s not just about your current fitness level – you need to assess your availability to design your ideal training program. While some enthusiasts can easily spend two hours each day at the gym, others need to work their schedule around children, hectic work deadlines, and other obligations. Consider how much time you can realistically devote to your exercise routine, and try to write specific days and times into your calendar.
Decide on Your Goals
Once you have a good idea of where you are and how you’re going to organize your training regimen, you need to think about your goals. Simply telling yourself that you’re going to exercise every other day is great, but it will be much easier to stay focused and motivated if you have a plan in mind.
Ask yourself whether you’re hoping to build muscle, lose weight, or simply get fitter. If you just want to improve your overall health, the Department of Health recommends incorporating 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity into your week. This can give you an initial goal to strive toward.
Keep It Simple
Next, you’ll need to choose your exercises. It’s easy to make things either too basic or too complicated when you’re getting started on a fitness routine for the first time. Ideally, you’ll need to focus on strength and keep your workout varied. Doing the same thing every day is more likely to induce injury and mental burnout.
While variety can be key to success, don’t take the idea too far. Stick to five exercises or less, and make sure that each one focuses on different areas throughout your body, including your core, your arms, your calves, your shoulders, and your thighs.
A full-body routine that concentrates on developing strength will help you to get that lean muscle mass that you need to fight off extra fat, while ensuring that you have the excess energy and stamina you need to tackle a hectic lifestyle.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race
To ensure that you keep on getting stronger, you’ll need to make your workouts harder over time. But don’t challenge yourself too much, too quickly. The last thing you want is to feel overwhelmed by every exercise. Placing yourself under too much pressure makes it more likely that you’ll simply give up on your goals. While you should be pushing yourself, don’t push so hard that you find yourself dreading your workout. This should be an exciting opportunity to look after yourself, and feel stronger and more energized.
Get Plenty of Rest
You need to incorporate plenty of recovery time into your training program. Many people start their New Year exercise routine in a frenzy, working out too intensely and giving up too quickly when their joints and muscles begin to ache.
Rather than overdoing it, leave about a day between each of your workout sessions and listen to your body. If you think that you need a little more time to recover, then take it – just make sure you’re not giving up on your routine entirely. As long as you’re getting at least two workouts in a week, then you should be on the right path.
